Marcavius settled next to his fire in the damp cavern, tucked away from the aftermath of Dominion. His hand stung with infection from his attempted incantation and rushed escape. Stupid. He palmed his feet as they ached from a long day of surveying. The pulsation of his back rhythmed.

The thick orange glowed, fighting the splashing sea underneath him. He sat above the flooding floor. The tide was rising and was only going to get worse. He had hoped that the sea wouldn’t rise too high again, like the first night he was there. Swallowing his fire and the supplies he had gathered.

“Wake up.” Marcavius hushed at the soaked body he had found on the shore. If the body didn’t move for a few more hours, he would resign himself to eating it. The face looked hollow and was already missing an arm. Not much was left on the bone that hadn’t already been eaten inside.
